Elton's Versace charity sale
Saturday, April 23 2005

A South African Aids charity is to auction off a Versace outfit designed exclusively for Elton John, it announced on April 22, 2005.

The costume, a harlequin creation by Gianni Versace, was worn by Elton at a concert in 1995 and subsequently donated to The Aids Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) through the Elton John Aids Foundation. All proceeds from the auction will go to AFSA's Aids care and education programs.

The auction will run online on the charity's website from April 22 until May 10, 2005, with the highest bidder being flown to a lavish presentation ceremony in Durban.

Elton was a close friend of Versace, once describing the fashion guru as his brother and mentor. Once known as 'The rock-and-roll designer', Versace designed outfits for Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, George Michael, Eric Clapton, Madonna and Michael Jackson.

Versace also designed stage costumes for the rest of Elton’s band, as well as stage sets and props, until his untimely death in 1997. His designs are now collectors’ items and have been known to fetch thousands of dollars on auction.
