Taiwan's media the rudest I've met, says Elton
Friday, September 24 2004 |
Elton John has launched a fresh attack on Taiwan’s media, saying the photographers and TV crews at Taipei airport were the rudest he had met in his pop career.
Elton cursed at a pack of aggressive photographers and cameramen on September 23, 2004 as they mobbed him while he was trying to clear immigration. The singer shouted expletives at the media horde and called them “rude, vile pigs”.
At his concert in Taipei that night, he apologised for the airport flare-up. “It’s great to be here. As you know, we had a little incident at the airport,” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
He said his tirade was not directed at the Taiwanese people, and he praised them for being helpful.
But he added, “The television and photographers at the airport were the rudest people I’ve ever met. I’ve been to 60 countries, and they are a disgrace to your country.”
He said the media should not have such easy access to celebrities at the airport.
“I’m sorry if I offended anyone in Taiwan,” Elton said. “I did not mean to. And to those guys, I meant every single word I said.”
