Does anyone know the answer to the question?...I'm not asking his favourite song, but which song he thinks is the best song he's ever written..I don't know if he's ever been asked (he must have) I don't just mean music..when I say song, I mean as a package, music and lyrics..

I don't know what we all think, but Elton talked about 'Candle in the Wind' once and thought that was as close to perfection as they had ever got.

Imo he's right about both songs. I do believe CITW and YS are as close to perfection as possible.

It's what I found on the web.I

"Your Song"

Elton John (1970)

What can I say, it's a perfect song. It gets better every time I sing it. I remember writing it at my parents' apartment in North London, and Bernie giving me the lyrics, sitting down at the piano and looking at it and going, "Oh, my God, this is such a great lyric, I can't f**k this one up." It came out in about 20 minutes, and when I was done, I called him in and we both knew. I was 22, and he was 19, and it gave us so much confidence. "Empty Sky" was lovely, but it was very naive. We went on to do more esoteric stuff like "Take Me to the Pilot," of course, but musically, this was a big step forward. And the older I get, the more I sing these lyrics, and the more they resonate with me.

Thanks freaks. And 'Your Song' is my second favorite song. Of course to ME the most perfect song ever written period is 'Rocket Man'. But that's just me. tongue.gif

That fairly recent interesting article and link on this site featured "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" as a "perfect" song.

If you haven't read the article, check it out here:

Great article Doug. Another song I love. SSMLT. Let's face it---Elton truly has a lot of perfect songs. He's an utter genius at writing songs, as is Bernie.

Bernie wrote most of the songs, the best one Elton wrote is probably The Man Who Never Died. laugh.gif

Songs are lightning
When they strike you
You hang on every line
They’re bits of history
Don’t try to change ‘em
It’s how you’re feeling at the time

Bernie wrote most part of the lyrics, the songs were written by Elton and Bernie.
