I found this great compilation with a few google searches, and downloaded it via torrent program.

So, I will create a report of each cd here, and include some new features previously unknown to help to explain how high I really rank the music I listen to. About those on other thread, and report of the 1st cd will come soon!

See the complete list of the cd's and their content here.

Listened to two first cd's, and I must say that I wasn't surprised of the pieces at all. They were mostly okay, ranging between two stars and three and a half stars.

So, this is the point where classical music was in it's beginnings - the music was clearly religious, sung by only a few male singers, with warm and soft sound. The usual style of classical singing was clearly undeveloped.

Anyway, the music is beautiful, but usually a bit boring. If you like calm music and choirs, try these very early pieces!

And now, as this is a compilation album, I won't give the cd's a star based rating - rather I will just define their value, based on my experience:

CD 1: Gregorian Chant - Feast Of Stephen / Marchaut: Chansons

Total value: 40,5 (Low)
Average value: 4,05 (Low)

No highlights or super highlights.
No disasters.

CD 2: Dufay / Josquin Des Pres: Motets

Total value: 48 (Low)
Average value: 4,36 (Low)

No highlights or super highlights.
No disasters.

It depends of the discs a LOT. One of the cd's by Bach got 38 pieces, while the cd by Gorecki got three pieces (and one of those lasts for 30 minutes). tongue.gif

But I'd say about 13 pieces per disc, should be 1300 pieces total (okay, the real number is 1388, after checking from windows media player...). rolleyes.gif

I wouldn't say this. Gregorian Chant can be quite "developped" in its own way. But the main point of Gregorian Chant is to be a prayer. Not to be a demonstration of technic. And yet it can sometimes be vocally quite technic and complex. It probably requires to be in a special state of mind to listen to such music. Or to look for peacefulness maybe. I guess then it's just a matter of tastes. cool.gif

Listened to two more discs. CD 3 consists of only instrumental music, so that was an interesting listen, to hear the earlier instrumental pieces. What's very interesting, is that there are many kind of instruments, which is delightful. The pieces are short, which is a bit disappointing. And the music concentrates more to the mood rather than memorable melodies, so nothing much new yet. CD 4 includes some pieces by Palestrina, and his work is stronger than other early composer's pieces. His pieces also includes the first "highlight" from this compilation.

CD 3: Wind Music From Renaissance Italy

Total value: 109,5 (Moderate)
Average value: 3,91 (Low)

No highlights or super highlights.
No disasters.

CD 4: Tallis: Spem in alium / Byrd: Mass For Three Voices / De Victoria: Gardanum / Palestrina: Missa Papae Marcelli / Allegri: Miserere

Total value: 106 (Moderate)
Average value: 7,54 (Moderate)

Highlights: "Missa Papae Marcelli -Kyrie"
No super highlights.
No disasters.

Listened to three more discs, and so far I have to say that disc 5 is my least favorite. Singing style has developed closer to opera, but for me it's harder to get into classical pieces that have vocals. On the other hand, I really like disc 6, particularly pieces composed by Johann Pachabel.

CD 5: Monteverdi: Vespers (Highlights), Madrigals

Total value: 76,5 (Low)
Average value: 3,64 (Low)

No highlights or super highlights.
No disasters.

CD 6: Schütz / Buxtehude / Pachelbel: Chamber Music

Total value: 237,5 (High)
Average value: 10,33 (Moderate)

Highlights: "Partie (Suite) In G Major -Sonatina", "Partie (Suite) In E Minor-Sonata. Adagio - Aria", "Canon And Gigue In D Major-1. Canon (Excerpt)"
No super highlights.
No disasters.

CD 7: Purcell: Dido And Aeneas (Highlights); The Fairy Queen (Highlights), Te Deum And Jubilate

Total value: 120 (Moderate)
Average value: 7,06 (Moderate)

No highlights or super highlights.
No disasters.

I have this same collection, and although I've not listened to it all (not even close), I have selected a few random disc and played them in the past. I've enjoyed what I've heard. Not sure I'd have the patience to listen to all 100 CDs in order and rate them. Full respect to you and this endeavor of classical music you're on. smile.gif

Gonna review a couple next cd's:

CD 8: Charpentier: Te Deum / Rameau: Une Symphonie Imaginaire

Total value: 408 (High)
Average value: 15,11 (High)

The first cd to include a super highlight... which is nowadays used as the theme music for Eurovision. So:

Highlights: "Te Deum For Soloists, Chorus And Orchestra, H 146 (Marc-Antoine Charpentier)-Te aeternum Patrem (Chorus, Soprano I/II, Mezzo-Soprano, Tenor)", "Te Deum For Soloists, Chorus And Orchestra, H 146 (Marc-Antoine Charpentier)-Tu devicto mortis aculeo (Chorus, Bass)", "Te Deum For Soloists, Chorus And Orchestra, H 146 (Marc-Antoine Charpentier)-In te, Domine, speravi (Chorus, Mezzo-Soprano, Tenor, Bass)", "Zaïs (Jean-Philippe Rameau)-Overture (Live At Theatre, Salle Molière, Poissy / 2003)", "Les Boréades / Act 4-Gavottes pour les Heures et les Zéphirs (Live At Theatre, Salle Molière, Poissy / 2003)"
Super highlights: "Te Deum For Soloists, Chorus And Orchestra, H 146 (Marc-Antoine Charpentier)-Prélude . Rondeau"
No disasters.

CD 9: Telemann: Concertos

Total value: 207,5 (Moderate)
Average value: 8,64 (Moderate)

Highlights: "Concerto In A Major For Two Violins In Scordatura And Continuo (Georg Philipp Telemann)-4. Bourrée", "Sonata (Concerto) In C Major For 4 Violins Without Basso Continuo-4. Allegro"
No super highlights.
No disasters.

I must say that I was a bit disappointed with Telemann - I expected better pieces. The next cd will get huge points as it includes Vivaldi's most famous pieces, "the four seasons". Strangely there is only one cd for his pieces, which is far too little IMO. Bach has five cd's, so I think Vivaldi should be worth at least three cd's... but no.
